John Charles Ryle was born in Macclesfield, England in 1816. He was educated at Eton and went on to Oxford University. He became a born-again Christian shortly before he finished his studies.
In 1841 JC Ryle was ordained as a Church of England minister and in 1880 he become the first Bishop of Liverpool.
He was a strong evangelical Christian with a firm belief in the Word of God. His conversion came from hearing Ephesians 2 verse 8 'By grace are you saved - through faith - and that not of yourself, it is a gift of God'.
JC Ryle wrote many books and sermons. The books are still being reprinted and the many of the sermons are available, both in print and on the internet.
JC Ryle died in 1900 at the age of 83. His influence through his writings is probably stronger now than when he was alive. He left a legacy which will never be erased.
